Neal Medlyn: American Juggalo

This is for real the subject line of an email I got last week:

It’s kinda one of the more exciting emails I’ve gotten lately.

I kinda wanna name the show that.

But for real, it was Amazon trying to get me to buy this Kindle single by Kent Russell. I did so and it’s a really, really interesting article.

Quote of the week:

“I'm 28 but act like I'm 17 most of the time.
I love to farm and shoot guys and wreck cars.
I'm a redneck and proud of it.
I like milk and German engineering and causing mayhem with my siblings.”

I wrote about the Gathering for Salon!

It might be one of the only positive things about the Gathering that’s out there?

Return from the Gathering 1

Hello America!

We’re back from the Gathering and wow, that was a big deal and man am I glad we went.

I’m writing something about it which might run somewhere, so for now I’ll just leave you with the above image and with my very few tweets (no reception at the Gathering itself) from Cave-In-Rock Illinois:

the 2011 Gathering of the Juggalos

I have done my ritual ablutions, my vigilance ceremonies and packed some cameras and some calamine lotion

Today, Farris Craddock and I are heading to the Gathering of the Juggalos.

I have a phone and I will be texting 40404 with updates, so follow them on my Twitter account.

The lyrics to one song go, “Serial Killers, we don’t die!” so I got these glasses:

So here I am and here this blog is and here we’ll be talking about the Juggalos and the Insane Clown Posse and the show I’m making about them.

There’s a lot to cover already, you guys.

The six Joker’s Cards:

Weird dude energy, which is the name of a fantastic blog Matthew Lyons told me about, but which I’ve been thinking of as representing all sorts of things I’m interested in and researching in its various iterations in movies, books, and such. It includes Harry Crews, Robert Bly, general men’s movement research, etc.

I also went to see Insane Clown Posse here in New York:

I spent a week upstate, in the woods, rapping and drinking tequila and experiencing katabasis.

Other than all of this, and thinking about wolves and wizards and swords and body hair and poverty and class warfare and sadomasochism and horror movies, I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen in this show, but I think I will figure it out over the next six months or so until it happens.

I’ll have more to tell you guys in a minute.

Thank you for looking at this.
